Rothenfels Castle in the Wölz Valley is one of the few medieval castles that has preserved its original appearance to this day.
The main wing of the castle was built in the 12th century AD on a steeply sloping red rock ledge by order of the Freising bishops and looks out over the town of Oberwölz.
Today it offers our guests in the summer a particularly charming accommodation with a view as otherwise only the castle falcons enjoy.
Rothenfels Castle was built in the 12th century and was the seat of the Freising castle counts until 1803. The castle was the seat of jurisdiction for the entire Wölz valley, Katsch, St. Peter am Kammersberg and Lind near Scheifling. The castle also houses a small Gothic chapel with a ceiling painting of St. Catherine.
After the French Wars, Rothenfels briefly became state property and has been privately owned since the mid-19th century until today.
