Anyone who claims that "extraterrestrial" architecture only moved in with the Kunsthaus in Graz is not familiar with Volker Giencke's greenhouses.

In the middle of the villa district of Graz's Schubertstraße, three inclined parabolic cylinders made of acrylic glass penetrate each other. Their ideal alignment allows lush growth of plants from four different climate zones inside.

The greenhouses
The old palm house from the early 20th century did not have to give way to the new building. It is still listed today on the grounds of the botanical institutes of the Karl-Franzens-University.

In peaceful neighbourhood to the new (kind) greenhouses, about which numerous international architectural journals have reported since their opening in 1995. They are three parabolic bodies whose orientation and construction allow a light efficiency of 98%. A value never before achieved anywhere else in the world. Responsible for this are curved double-shell acrylic glass elements clamped into a minimized lightweight construction. Supply lines are not visible, but rather partially integrated into the supporting parts.

But now into the interior. Four climate zones are simulated, encompassing temperatures between 8°C and 24°C and a humidity between 50% and 80%. The tropical or warm house accommodates, for example, tropical useful plants, orchids and mangrove plants. Mediterranean vegetation with citrus plants, eucalyptus and the like can be found in the cold house. The vegetation of South America and Australia thrives in the temperate house, cacti and other drought-loving plants in the succulent house. Wooden walkways and bridges lead the visitor across the climatic zones.

The necessary temperature equalisation is provided on the one hand by the hot water heating system integrated in the supporting structure and on the other hand by a cooling system that sprays microscopically fine water mist when required and cools the greenhouses down by 5°C immediately.
